Daria Kasatkina came out as a gay publicly last month in an interview after living as a bisexual for a few years.

Kasatkina finally felt comfortable embracing her true self at a time when her country is increasingly rejecting people who identify as such. Homosexuality is a very problematic subject in Russia and while legal it's not a welcoming place for people who identify as such and generally offers very little protection against discrimination.

So Kasatkina publicly coming out was and is a huge deal both locally in Russia and internationally. The Russian received a lot of praise and warm messages from people in her country and outside of her country which made her really happy.

"I don't know how the social media filter works, but I've just heard very good things. Not just from the west but also people from my country. I'm really happy about it. As I saw, it was not just a good thing for me, also it helped other people. That's great and I feel great. I feel happy about it and about myself and that's most important."

She added:

"Yeah, I feel more free and happy. I think I made the right step. With the situation in the world, all this stuff that is tough, when if not now? Let's put everything into the same pool."
