Mirra Andreeva is going to contest her maiden Wimbledon and ahead of it she shared her thoughts heading into it.
Mirra Andreeva didn't have the easy way into Wimbledon. The 16-year-old had to play the qualifiers and handled them as well as you can hope. Winning matches without many complications earned her a maiden appearance in the main draw of Wimbledon and she expressed happiness about being able to get it done.
She never played on the grass amongst the professionals on the WTA Tour and expectedly there were some struggles. It's a specific surface on which you need to learn how to move properly and Andreeva has yet to find herself on it though it's getting better with every match.
I am very happy with this, it's my first tournament on grass, my first matches and, in the beginning I didn't feel pretty comfortable on the surface, but now, step-by-step, I'm getting more and more confident here.
And I'm still sliding a lot, I think. I'm falling too much. I think I'm the person who falls more than everybody else.
While her on-court demeanour exudes confidence the teenager admitted that she didn't really feel all that confident. She's great on clay and she proved that at Roland Garros taking on challenges confidently but the grass was a different story. She faces Xiyu Wang in the first round of the event and that's a tricky one.
I didn't feel confident at all. I just came here, I just tried to do my thing. I just tried to play. And, I was thinking like, 'well you have no expectations, you just play, it's your first tournament on grass, t's already perfect that you managed to get here.'
So I just tried to play my game and fight for every ball, and now I'm here in the main draw. I'm really happy and we will see what will happen in the main draw.
