'Too Much': Rune Reveals He 'Received Death Threats'

Holger Rune spoke about receiving death threats, something that's becoming a new normal, even though it shouldn't.

Being a professional athlete has its pros but also cons. Those pros include travelling the world, meeting new people, and being able to do what the athletes love to do, and that's playing the sport that they chose.

For players on the ATP Tour, it's similar, but there are also some cons to it, some that could be avoided. Those are death threats that players often receive, especially after losing a match, due to people losing money on bets.

In the past, Taylor Fritz said that after a lost match, he receives around 50 to 100 death threats, and also WTA player Taylor Townsend admitted that she receives the same. Threats, which always come, but shouldn't.

Speaking to The Times, also Rune revealed that he received death threats from people, not being able to understand how can someone write something like that. Moreover, the 20-year-old believes that those people wouldn't be actually able to come to him and say those things in person.

"I’ve received death threats. It’s just too much. Why would you ever write something to a person like that? It’s just ridiculous. It would never happen that somebody goes up to my face and [says] something like this."

Heading into Wimbledon, the youngster didn't have a lot of experience on the grass court, but this year, he finally recorded his first professional victory on the surface, and he's finding his footing ahead of the grass-court major.

"It’s a surface that can suit me very well and this year is already going better. For my game I like to come forward, I serve well and like to return. I just think there’s a few adjustments which I’ve been ready to do this year."

"Everybody has their harder surface to play on. I think for the British people it’s maybe easier for them to adjust to the grass, but then again it’s not easy for them to adjust to the clay. We all have our advantages."

The young Dane was also asked about the controversial Wimbledon poster. While Andy Murray was left out of the legends' part, Rune wasn't featured among youngsters as the creators chose Carlos Alcaraz and Jannik Sinner instead.

"I saw this poster and I don’t have much to say about it. If you talk about rivalries, Alcaraz and I have played plenty more times [including matches at junior tournaments] than Sinner and Alcaraz. We have already played each other twice on the tour. It is always good matches with him, really challenging and we can bring the best out of each other. For sure we can have a great rivalry."
