Jannik Sinner reached the quarter-finals at the 2025 Wimbledon Championships, but he might not play his upcoming match because of an injury.
Sinner moved to the quarter-finals of this year's Wimbledon Championships with a most bizarre scoreline. He was down 3-6, 5-7, 2-2 to Grigor Dimitrov when the Bulgarian player injured himself and was forced to retire from the match.
It was an incredibly sad evening in London, with thousands of fans saddened by Dimitrov's injury. The 34-year-old himself struggled to hold back his tears, as he was close to one of the biggest wins of his tennis career.
But Dimitrov wasn't the only injured player in that match. Already in the first set, Sinner fell when trying to chase one of the balls, and as a result of the fall, he seemingly injured his right elbow.
He even had a medical timeout during the match, and shook off his arm every time he got a chance, signalling that he felt some discomfort. Naturally, after his "win," which even Sinner admitted didn't really feel like a win, he was asked about the nature of his injury.
The ATP World No. 1 player revealed that he will undergo magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to assess the nature of his injury, suggesting that the injury is likely of a more serious nature.
"It happened very early in the match. First game. It was quite an unfortunate fall. I checked the videos a little bit, and it didn’t seem like a tough one, but I still felt it quite a lot, especially on the serve and forehand. I could feel it. Let’s see. Tomorrow we are gonna check to see how it is, and then we'll see."
The injury comes at a time when Sinner stopped working with his physiotherapist, Marco Panichi, and fitness trainer, Ulises Badio. That's an unfortunate timing for the 23-year-old, but he admitted that he is not worried about himself, as he trusts the physios and doctors who are available at Wimbledon.
"Here, they have good ATP physios, in any case. The doctor’s good. As I said, tomorrow we are going to check with an MRI to see if there’s something serious, and then we’ll try to adjust it."
During his press conference, Sinner also spoke about why Dimitrov was able to trouble him so much. The Italian player admitted that his opponent's serve was one of the main reasons. In the two-and-a-half sets played, the Bulgarian player hit 14 aces compared to the top seed's four.
"He served incredibly well. Very precise, also very fast. Changed up the game very very good. It was a bit breezy. He used the wind in the best possible way. I could feel that he prepared the match in a very good way and executed even better. He was playing some great tennis."
"After, with the roof closed, you don’t know what’s happening. There were some good rallies at the beginning of the third set. I tried to stay there mentally. I broke him back at 5-4. Then he played again lights-out tennis again to break me back. I think he’s showing his potential. It’s very unfortunate, as I said on court. I wish him a speedy recovery."
In the quarter-finals, Sinner will play against another player with a great serve. Ben Shelton awaits the World No. 1, and Sinner knows what to expect from that matchup.
"Return of the serve, for sure, is the first thing. Obviously, he’s improved a lot from the back of the court. He had a great match against Carlos [Alcaraz] in Paris, too. He knows how to play on every surface."
"I faced him last year here. It was a very, very difficult match. Let’s see what’s coming. It’s gonna be a problem in two days, no? Now I have to focus on other stuff first and hopefully be 100%."
