Elina Svitolina is Ukraine's number one and has been for a very long time with the player recently winning a medal for her country at the Tokyo Olympics.
Svitolina has been out of tennis for a few weeks now opting to take some time away from the game due to the ongoing situation back home. Her hometown of Odessa is fairly close to the front and has been shelled multiple times since the start of the war which put a heavy burden on Svitolina who struggled with injuries in the past weeks as well.
She promised to return to tennis better and stronger once everything settles. Until then, Svitolina is still supporting Ukrainian tennis by other means. She reached out to several promising teenage players from her country sending them gear and equipment so they can continue their tennis journey. With the ongoing war in Ukraine and the devastation it leaves in the country, resources for sports will mostly be used for other stuff which leaves that area of the country's development at risk.
Good-willed Ukrainian with the ability to do so will be encouraged to support young and promising players in order to keep the sport in the country alive. Both tennis players she helped Yevheniia Zelenska and Anastasiia Cherniakova thanked her on Instagram. Both of them are currently located in Poland after escaping the war in their country.
