I hear the @atptour and @WTA are meeting in Madrid to discuss potentially taking away all ranking points from @Wimbledon championships this year so in essence turning it then into an exhibition event.
There is currently an ongoing ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 event in Madrid, but there is also a summit in regard to the situation of the Wimbledon Championships.
Tennis has found itself in the spotlight and not in the way the sport would like. Despite being a very controversy-averse sport, tennis recently created a fair bit of drama in the world of sports.
The most recent drama is, however, very contentious because of several things. A few weeks ago, the Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) and Wimbledon announced that Russian and Belarusian players won’t be allowed to compete at the events in the United Kingdom this year.
The ban comes in reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. The LTA and Wimbledon elected to follow guidelines set out by the British government, which has taken a strong stance against the war in Ukraine.
Even so, the ATP and WTA discouraged events from making any similar decision. However, that didn’t discourage Wimbledon or the LTA from imposing a ban. In response to that, the ATP and WTA have harshly criticized the move but that might not be all.
According to some reports, the Tours could strip Wimbledon and all other tournaments that took similar steps of their points, which would practically make these events some kind of exhibitions.
Obviously, the prestige of Wimbledon would remain, but players not getting any points would be a massive hit for them and the event. According to the latest reports, discussions are currently ongoing in Madrid on how to proceed with the current situation, with players awaiting any resolution to the situation.
Opinions of the players that have decided to speak out really differ. Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic, Elina Svitolina, and Alexander Bublik are among those who shared their opinion on the situation.
