Coco Gauff took part in the Atlanta exhibition match held in Atlantic Station and she defeated compatriot Taylor Townsend in straight sets.
Initially, Gauff was scheduled to face Leylah Fernandez however the Canadian injured her foot badly at Roland Garros not being able to recover in time for the match. To keep it local, Atlanta resident Taylor Townsend accepted the proposal and played Gauff in the match.
Coco Gauff said:
"I think it was a great performance. Had a lot of fun, wasn't sure how it was going to be tonight. Taylor made it super fun. These matches have to [be] with the right person and I think Taylor was the right person."
Gauff is not done with tennis in Atlanta as she will take on Sofia Kenin in another exhibition tonight. Gauff further said:
"Since I was younger, my dad told me I could change the world with my racquet. He didn't mean that by just playing tennis. He meant speaking out on issues like this. The first thing my dad said to me after I got off court was, 'I'm proud of you and I love what you wrote on the camera.' I think my parents support me when talking about issues like this."
