Alycia Parks had a really sudden rise in the past couple of months but noted coach Brad Gilbert thinks there is a bumpy road ahead.
Parks is a very raw player with a lot of talent but that talent needs to be honed in the proper way. She already did a lot by winning a WTA trophy by beating a top 10-ranked player. It was in Lyon and it was a win over Caroline Garcia. That alone proved that she has got what it takes but now comes the time to prove it on the court when people are familiar with your game.
Love to see somebody that wasn't on people's radar a few years ago doing what she (Alycia Parks) is doing. Now she's (No.) 50 in the world, now she's on people's radar, now can she make that next leap? That's the beauty of tennis, the beauty of sports. She wasn't on the radar, now people know what she's doing. Can she get better from here?
It's already been an issue for the American as she only won one match since triumphing in Lyon losing to players that she should have beaten. Her rise mostly coincided with the indoor hard court season which is the surface that probably benefits her game the best.
Her powerful serves are really hard to stop in those conditions where there are no outdoor factors. Her 1-6 1-6 loss in the Indian Wells opener certainly proved that players now know how to attack her and getting over that hump will be crucial in her journey to take the next step as a player.
Gilbert will be very curious as to how she handles that challenge and whether she can make that next step this year. He believes there is talent enough that she gets it done.
