Bianca Andreescu and Garbine Muguruza were one of the first players to kick off the WTA Tour matches in 2023 as they competed at the 2023 Adelaide International 1.
Their clash was scheduled as the Spanish player got a wild-card and entered the draw of the event. Despite the meeting being between the no. 55 and no. 46 player, it was a match in which two Grand Slam champions met and one of the best first-round matches early in the season.
But for quite some time it looked like a show of one woman. Muguruza entered the season much better and effectively in the best way possible. She won the first set 6-0 after just 24 minutes and was set for an easy win.
In the second set, Muguruza continued to play similar tennis and quickly built a 5-2 lead. She was serving for the match at 5-3 and even had a 30-0 lead. However, her opponent fought back and showed her qualities.
The Canadian managed to force a tie-break and then dominated in it as she won it 7-3 and took the second set.
In the third set, it was Andreescu, who dominated this time. She won the set 6-1 and secured her first victory of the 2023 season.
