The 2024 Guadalajara Open will be the first WTA 500 tournament after the US Open, and the prize money details have been released.
Last year, the Guadalajara Open was a WTA 1000 tournament, but it was demoted to a WTA 500 event in 2024. That means that prize money and points on offer were reduced as well for the tournament that will run from September 9th to 15th.
That will impact the defending champion, Maria Sakkari, the most. Sakkari won the title last year after a great run, and she is among the players who will compete at the tournament also this year.
Although the tournament was demoted to a WTA 500 event, the tournament organizers still managed to attract a very competitive field of players, headlined by the Olympic gold medalist, Qinwen Zheng.
Defending champion Sakkari is another player on the entry list, and the likes of Danielle Collins, Jelena Ostapenko, Emma Navarro, and Anna Kalinskaya will also try to go far at the 2024 Guadalajara Open.
They will all be fighting for their share of $922,573, which is the total prize money that will be distributed at the Guadalajara Open in 2024. This is much less than last year's $2,788,468, which corresponded to the WTA 1000 tournament.
The champion in Guadalajara will take home $142,000 and 500 WTA points, while the runner-up will be able to celebrate with 325 ranking points and $87,655.
Plenty of players will be hoping to make it at least to the final, including the former World No. 1, VIctoria Azarenka, as well as former World No. 2, Paula Badosa, who will be among the favorites to win the tournament.
Players that exit the tournament in the first round also won't leave the Mexican city empty-handed as they will receive 1 ranking points as well as $8,860.
While the prize money on offer doesn't significantly increase in the second round, with the players getting $13,170, there is a massive jump in points awarded, as the second-round losers will get 60 WTA ranking points.
Those that make it at least to the quarterfinals will get 108 points and $24,200 for their efforts, while the two losing semi-finalists will be rewarded with 195 points and $51,205.
While Sakkari, as the defending champion, is set to lose points compared to last year, she, and many of her rivals, will be motivated to do well immediately after the US Open.
On top of that, plenty of spots for the 2024 WTA Finals are still open, and that means that players will fight also for those when competing in Guadalajara. The full prize money and points breakdown for the 2024 Guadalajara Open can be seen below.
