The 2024 Guadalajara Open won't be a WTA 1000 tournament, but it will still be an exciting WTA 500 event with a stacked entry list.
Due to various reasons, such as the COVID-19 pandemic, and absence of some of the tournaments from the calendar, the Guadalajara Open was a WTA 1000 tournament in 2022 and 2023.
Generally, Mexico has been a lucky place for Maria Sakkari, who played the final at the event in 2022, and last year, she won the biggest trophy in her career in Guadalajara, but unfortunately for her, technically, she will not get a chance to defend it.
The reason for that is simple. Although the Greek player will compete at the Guadalajara Open in 2024, the tournament won't be a WTA 1000 event anymore, as it was downgraded to a WTA 500 tournament, running from September 9th to 15th.
Still, Sakkari will try to defend her title in Guadalajara, even though of a 'lesser' value, which will be reflected also on her ranking as a result. Another player that will certainly feel the ranking hit is the last year's surprising finalist, Caroline Dolehide, who will also compete at the tournament this year.
But both of last year's finalists will need to battle past very solid opposition at the tournament if they want to succeed again. It will be the third edition of the Guadalajara Open, and an Olympic gold medalist will make an appearance at the tournament.
Qinwen Zheng experienced the biggest triumph of her tennis career during the summer when she bested Donna Vekic in the final of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, and now, she will want to follow up on that success also on the WTA Tour and Guadalajara will be one of the places, where she will try to do that.
Danielle Collins will retire from professional tennis after the 2024 season, and during her farewell tour, she will also make an appearance in Mexico, if her health permits her to, as she also appears on the entry list.
Jelena Ostapenko is also among the players that signed up for the tournament, as are the likes of Emma Navarro, Anna Kalinskaya, Victoria Azarenka, and Beatriz Haddad Maia.
The players' field's strength can be seen by the fact that the likes of the former World No. 2, Paula Badosa, and former World No. 4, Caroline Garcia, might not even make it among the seeded players.
Marie Bouzkova and Veronika Kudermetova are also set to make an appearance in the Mexican city, as are two American players, Taylor Townsend and Sloane Stephens. The full entry list for the 2024 Guadalajara Open can be viewed below.
