Danielle Collins provided an injury update after having to withdraw from the 2024 Canadian Open in Toronto and the 2024 Cincinnati Open.
This year has been interesting for Collins, who had a tremendous run earlier this year at the end of the Sunshine Double. Not long after she announced that this year would be her final year on the WTA Tour, she won a couple of trophies.
It's been a really good year for the American, who proved that she has the necessary level to be one of the best. It's bittersweet because even if she was playing well, it's still her final year on Tour, so many had the 'what if' talks.
Collins was never interested in them; she simply wanted to focus on finishing this year as well as she could before retiring. Because of that, it's unfortunate that she's currently away from competing due to an injury.
These are the final months of her career, and obviously, she doesn't want to spend them away from the courts. However, she has to, after suffering an abdominal injury, which can be tricky to overcome.
In a social media update post on Instagram, Collins confirmed that she is dealing with an abdominal strain, which she had before as well. That time around, she missed around four months of action, so she's trying to be careful this time around to avoid that.
The hope is that she'll be ready for the Monterrey Open, beginning on August 19th, one week before the US Open. After that, she wants to play at the US Open, but none of that is confirmed yet.
"Little update for all who have been reaching out and checking in on me since my injury at the Olympics. After having a heat stroke in Paris, I strained my rectus abdominis. I had a similar injury to this area almost four years ago that kept me from competing for over four months. Obviously I don’t want to have a repeat of that."— Collins provides update on social media<br>
"As I am approaching the end of my career, it has been important to try and rest and recover so that this can heal as quickly as possible. I was really bummed to have to pull out of Toronto and Cincinatti. My hope is to return to competition in Monterey. I’m hoping to continue with my season after US Open and continue to try and go after the goals I set out for this year."
The strain is the latest in a string of unlucky events for Collins. Her Olympics were derailed by a heat stroke, which she was able to recover from.
Unfortunately, it's nothing new for her career, as she had to deal with lots of physical issues in the past. Hopefully, these last few months will go smoothly so she can peacefully retire.
"Thank you to everyone who has reached out over the last few weeks and all the love and support as always."
