Danielle Collins battled Iga Swiatek in a very tense match at the 2024 Paris Olympics, admitting that she had been struggling with a condition for a while after the match.
The two quarter-finalists at the Olympic Games in Paris were involved in a very tense battle that went on for a while and concluded in the third set. The Polish player was able to advance to the next round after Collins retired from the match down 1-4 in the third set.
She retired from the match because it was apparent that she was heading towards a loss and because she was exhausted after a couple of days of very exhausting tennis in brutal conditions in the French capital.
Paris has been experiencing very warm weather these days, and Collins has been struggling with it. Before the match with World No. 1, she endured a couple of very challenging matches, such as a three-set battle with Caroline Wozniacki, during which she complained to the umpire that she wasn't able to get water.
She overcame all of that and won in three sets, but it was very draining, and it left her body quite exhausted. Things wouldn't be that much easier going forward.
"I’ve asked kindly can you please help me get some water. We have 60 seconds on this changeover. Can you please help me get water? Thank you."
In her next match, Collins faced Camila Osorio, which proved to be another complicated three-set match, which was also played in hot weather. There was an excessive heat warning for that day, and Collins suffered a heat stroke.
She told the media after her loss to Swiatek that she nearly collapsed after coming off the court and spent three hours on a medical table.
She was totally overwhelmed, and it left her very exhausted for the battle with Swiatek. She competed about as well as possible, but in the third set, the Polish player was just too overwhelming.
"I had a heat stroke. Nearly collapsed when I came off court, and I was on a medical table for three hours. I wasn’t able to receive cool water during the entire match."
"Didn’t have insulated bottles. I overheated, having full body convulsions and somehow played doubles. The conditions here have been brutal. And I suffered the consequences of that last night and today."
Despite all of that, Collins's first and final showing at the Olympics was memorable. As she announced earlier, this year will be her final year on the WTA Tour. Her retirement will likely happen after the US Open, so she's enjoying her final weeks in the tennis world.
Unfortunately, her Olympic participation ended one match before the medal rounds, but the American will be proud of how she battled. Getting a heatstroke is quite unlucky, and the draw with Swiatek wasn't the easiest.
