From September 19th until 25th, some of the best WTA players will meet at the 2022 Japan Open in Tokyo for a WTA 500 event.
Since Karolina Pliskova's victory over Naomi Osaka in the championship match at the WTA 500 event in Japan's capital city in 2018, the city has not hosted a WTA Tour stop. However, the Japan Open returns to Tokyo four years later and features home favorite Naomi Osaka in the draw.
The four-time Grand Slam champion. will take on Daria Saville in the first round of the event and can potentially face the fifth-seeded Beatriz Haddad Maia in the second round. Another Grand Slam champion, Sofia Kenin will also take part and she will start against one of the qualifiers.
Also this year's Wimbledon champion, Elena Rybakina will play at the 2022 Japan Open in Tokyo. The Kazakh will meet Liudmila Samsonova in the first round and she's the eight-seeded at the event.
Top 4 seeded players have a BYE and so they advance directly into the second round. Paula Badosa is the first-seeded at the event and in the second round, she will play winner of the match between Qinwen Zheng and Misaki Doi. Another Grand Slam champion, Garbine Muguruza is the third-seeded and she will start against one of the qualifiers in the second round.
