Alexander Zverev is putting forward some excellent performances on grass as he booked his first semi-final at the Halle Open in six years by beating Nicolas Jarry in straight sets.
Zverev returned to Halle this year for some grass tennis and it proved quite a good decision. He initially planned to play in Stuttgart but opted against that after picking up an injury against Casper Ruud at the French Open.
The German spoke about feeling much better about his tennis and form leading up to Halle explaining that he feels like he can win events again. A deep run in Paris certainly boosted his confidence and it's showing in Halle. He made a winning start at the event beating Thiem in the opening round and then followed that up by beating Shapovalov next.
In the quarter-final, Zverev faced Nicolas Jarry and it was a really close first set which lasted 12 games in total. Both Jarry and Zverev have similar strengths with their serve and both had 4 aces in the opening set. They both played 24 rallies behind the first serve and won 18 of those. Zverev was a bit sharper on the second serve which proved enough to ultimately win the opening set 7-5.
The second set featured a strong opening from Zverev as he took an early lead once more. After that, he had no problems, but there were many rallies going on as Jarry tried to push the German to keep himself in play.
He had some good games but for the most part, Zverev was able to handle it rather well finishing things off comfortably. The final score was 7-5 6-3 as the German moves on to face Alexander Bublik for a spot in the final. Zverev had 12 aces and 22 winners in the match.
