Iga Swiatek had an incredible season last year and she's now been nominated for the Best Athlete ESPY Award.
Iga Swiatek was undoubtedly the best player on the WTA Tour last year posting an incredible record of 67-9. She won multiple trophies including two Grand Slam trophies. Her seasons started in Australia where she lost to Barty in Adelaide and then to Danielle Collins in Melbourne. Dubai was a loss to Ostapenko after which her incredible run started.
She won Doha by beating Kontaveit in the final and then won Indian Wells by beating Sakkari in the final and Miami by beating Osaka in the final. Clay season was obviously phenomenal as she added a Stuttgart trophy and a Rome trophy. Roland Garros proved another stellar event which gave her her second Grand Slam trophy and extended her winning streak to over 30 matches.
The streak ended at Wimbledon on grass against Alize Cornet and that started a somewhat shakier second part of the year. The highlight was obviously the US Open where she won her 3rd Grand Slam trophy. She would win one more trophy until the end of the year beating Vekic in San Diego. One week earlier, Swiatek stood in the Ostrava final but lost to Krejcikova.
So that was her amazing season. An incredible overall record, becoming world number one and having an incredible 37-match winning streak in the middle of it. Good enough to earn an ESPY nomination for Best Athlete alongside some other great players. It's the first time she's been nominated at the ESPYs and there is a pretty good chance that she ends up winning it.
Tennis players do win fairly often and she's had an incredible season which is more than deserving. The good level persisted this year so it proves that last year was not a one-off or some kind of fluke.
