Iga Swiatek lifted her maiden hardcourt Grand Slam trophy after beating Ons Jabeur in the 2022 US Open final.
A new women's US Open champion was set to be crowned at the Arthur Ashe Stadium on Saturday evening as Iga Swiatek took on Ons Jabeur. While the young Pole has already won two Grand Slam titles before, both at the Roland Garros, it would be the first one for Jabeur.
However, the Tunisian has already played a major final at this year's Wimbledon, so both players were entering the tournament with the experience of playing a Grand Slam final, even though only Swiatek knew how it feels to win one.
Throughout the tournament, both players showed dominant tennis, so there was no doubt that two of the best players in the world were competing for the 2022 US Open title. Also the WTA Rankings will feature Swiatek as the World No. 1 and Jabeur as the World No. 2 on Monday.
The Polish player entered the match in the best possible way when she won the first 12 out of the first 14 points, and soon she was up 3-0 in the first set. However, her opponent fought back and got the break back as she wanted to level the score of the set.
Yet, Swiatek was against that. She upped her level once more and won three consecutive games to win the first set 6-2 in just 31 minutes.
After only a few more minutes in the second set, the scoreboard showed 6-2, 3-0, 40-15, and it seemed that the women's final would be over very soon. But the Tunisian showed her fighting spirit, and she soon had a total of three break points to get a 5-4 lead in the second set.
Yet, the World No. 1 used all of her experience from the Grand Slam finals and won this very important game to keep her chances of ending the match in two sets.
After both players held their service games a couple more times, Swiatek had her first match point in the twelfth game of the second set, but her opponent stayed calm under pressure and forced a tie-break.
Alongside some stunning shots, both players also made a lot of mistakes in the tie-break, and after a few minutes, Swiatek had another match point. This time, she used her chance to win her first US Open and third Grand Slam title in her career.
