Frances Tiafoe struggled to hide his disappointment after his semi-final loss to Carlos Alcaraz at the 2022 US Open.
Tiafoe was just one set away from reaching the final in New York, but he couldn't do it. Although he beat Alcaraz in the opening set of their semi-final match, the Spaniard then easily won the second and third sets.
The World No. 26 then won the fourth set in a tie-break while saving a match point along the way. However, the fifth set was dominated by Alcaraz, who controlled the last set of the match to reach his maiden Grand Slam final.
The Spaniard won the match 6-7(6), 6-3, 6-1, 6-7(5), 6-3, disappointing not only Tiafoe but also the crowd in New York, which heavily supported their player.
Since Tiafoe was the home player, he was, untraditionally, allowed to address the crowd after the match. Usually, it's only the winner who speaks to the fans, but in this case, Tiafoe could also speak to the fans who cheered him on.
Tiafoe couldn't hold back his tears. He was disappointed by the loss, knowing that he gave it his all. Still, he promised to come back and bring the title to the American fans.
"I gave everything I had. Too good from Carlos tonight, but I gave everything I had in the last two weeks. Obviously, I came here wanting to win the US Open, I feel like I let you guys down. This one really hurts. This one really, really hurts."
"Man, you're going to win a lot of Grand Slams. You are a hell of a player, a hell of a person. I am happy I got to share the court on such a big stage with you. I am going to come back and I will win this thing one day. Sorry guys."
