Paula Badosa's injury woes show no sign of relenting after the Spaniard gave a sad update about another physical issue.
Badosa's principal problem began when she sustained a lower back injury in mid-2023. That kept her out for the remainder of the season and has consistently resurfaced during the past 18 months.
The former WTA world No. 2 admitted in an interview earlier this year that she expects to retire earlier than most players because of that problem, but wants to compete for as long as possible.
Finding the motivation to keep bouncing back must be challenging. In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Badosa announced she would miss the next few weeks because of an injury to her psoas, a muscle in her lower back and abdomen.
"Hello everyone, Due to a psoas injury, I will have to be out of competition for a few weeks. I am going through really tough times. Sometimes everything feels like a tunnel with no way out… but if there’s one thing I’ve always shown, it’s that I never stop fighting."
Badosa's fighting spirit deserves huge admiration and is quite inspiring. However, the post's tone makes it clear how hard these moments are for her since they have been repeated in the last couple of years.
The 2025 Australian Open semifinalist followed with a second post thanking those who have supported her. Badosa is among the most popular WTA players, and the love from fans has helped her through the tough times.
"I want to wholeheartedly thank all the countless people who are sending me their support, their affection, and their energy during these challenging days. That encouragement sustains me and gives me strength to keep going, even when everything feels like an uphill battle. Thank you for being there."
This latest setback is just a few weeks after Badosa retired at the 2025 Berlin Open with a leg issue. The Spaniard was very emotional afterward and smashed her racket before leaving the court.
Badosa's confirmation that she will be absent for a few weeks ends her hopes of playing at next week's 2025 Citi Open in Washington. The 27-year-old won a first title in over two years by beating Marie Bouzkova in the 2024 final.
Hopefully, that is the only tournament Badosa will miss. The 2025 Canadian Open immediately follows the Citi Open, and then the 2025 Cincinnati Open occurs without a break. If the issue is severe, she could miss a lot of tennis.
Recent announcements might soften the disappointment for fans of Badosa not playing in Washington. Venus Williams revealed that she had accepted a wild card into the event after being absent from the WTA Tour for sixteen months.
On the men's side, Nick Kyrgios announced his involvement. The two-time Citi Open winner has been out since March after a setback in his recovery from another injury, but is ready to return in the American capital.
The Citi Open will be the first 500-level tournament of the North American hard-court swing, and it should be a great spectacle for fans.
