Nick Kyrgios will make another comeback from injury after announcing his involvement at a tournament occurring later this month.
Kyrgios's long-awaited return to the
ATP Tour began at the start of this year after he had played just one tournament during the previous two years because of severe wrist and knee injuries.
Unfortunately, Kyrgios' wrist has continued to impact him this year. He retired during the second set against Botic van de Zandschulp at the 2025 Indian Wells Open and after the first set against Karen Khachanov at the 2025 Miami Open.
The 2022 Wimbledon runner-up has shown signs of his past level in every match, showing that the technical ability is still there. Whether he will ever fully overcome his troublesome wrist remains to be seen.
That match against Khachanov in Miami was his most recent appearance.
Kyrgios withdrew from the entire grass-court swing after sustaining another setback when trying to return from a physical ailment.
What no one can accuse Kyrgios of is giving up. Many players would have retired by now after so many repeated injury issues over the last few years, but the Australian is determined to compete while he still can.
That has been shown again by Kyrgios confirming his involvement at the 2025
Citi Open in Washington, scheduled from July 21st to 27th. He has won the event twice and cannot wait to return.
"Hey guys, it's Nick Kyrgios here. I cannot wait to be returning this summer to DC for the Mubadala Citi DC Open. It's one of my favorite tournaments. I love the fans, I love the energy, and as two-time champion, I never feel more comfortable at any other event. So, make sure to get your tickets, and let's run this back. I can't wait to see you all."
Kyrgios' last appearance at the ATP 500 tournament was during his second title run in 2022. The 30-year-old, a few weeks after finishing as the Wimbledon runner-up, beat Yoshihito Nishioka to seal another title in the American capital.
Although Kyrgios's fiery antics on the court and controversial opinions off it have made him a divisive figure, no one can deny that he attracts fans. Expect the stadium to be close to full when he plays in the opening round.
The Citi Open is a combined ATP and WTA tournament. On the women's side, Emma Raducanu, Jessica Pegula, and Elena Rybakina
are among those on the entry list announced over two weeks ago.
Fans received more exciting news when
Venus Williams stunningly announced she would make her first appearance on the WTA Tour in nearly 16 months after accepting a wild card for the Citi Open.
The seven-time Grand Slam champion is now 45 years old and unranked, but that has not dissuaded her from returning to professional tennis. Hopefully, she can treat the fans to some great tennis regardless of the final result.
Kyrgios and Williams's involvements add an extra dimension to what was already set to be a great event in Washington. Last year's iteration included Paula Badosa winning her first title in over two years.
