Novak Djokovic once again got only a couple of steps away from his 25th Grand Slam title, but once again, he fell just short, losing to Jannik Sinner in the semi-finals of the 2025 Wimbledon Championships.
Djokovic has been trying really hard to win one more Grand Slam title. At this year's Wimbledon, the seven-time champion came two matches away from lifting his 25th major trophy, but Sinner bested him in three easy sets in the semi-final match.
Both players on the court were physically compromised. Sinner injured his elbow in his fourth-round match against Grigor Dimitrov, while Djokovic hurt his hip on a match point during his quarter-final match against Flavio Cobolli.
It was an unlucky moment for the 38-year-old, who competed against Sinner, but visibly, he couldn't give his best. Djokovic's movement was noticeably slower compared to his best, which then created different issues for him, as he struggled to stay in the rallies with the Italian.
While Sinner's physical issue didn't seem to impact him at all, Djokovic's case was much different. The 24-time Grand Slam champion even requested a medical timeout between the second and third sets.
After losing the match, he shared a brief conversation with Sinner at the net, and during his post-match press conference, the Serbian legend revealed what that quick chat was about.
Djokovic said that Sinner felt sorry for the Serbian, as he was aware of the fact that Djokovic couldn't compete at his best.
"He apologized for me feeling bad today. There's nothing to apologize for from his side. Obviously, he's done very well for himself today, and for the last year and a half, he's been the best player in the world. He's gonna have a chance to win his first Wimbledon title."
Djokovic felt like there was no need to apologize. At the end of the day, he is a professional, and he knows that injuries are part of professional sports.
The 38-year-old also revealed what he told his opponent. He wished Sinner luck in the final, in which the ATP World No. 1 player will take on Carlos Alcaraz. They will compete in their second consecutive Grand Slam final.
"I wished him luck, it's gonna be his first final here and I'm sure he's going to be super pumped. After the finals they played in Paris, I think the anticipation for this final is big. It's amazing. They're definitely several levels above everyone right now."
Djokovic will now rest and recover, setting his sights on the 2025 US Open. He still wants to win his 25th major, and the fact that he's been reaching the latter stages of Grand Slams this year just proves that he might be capable of doing just that.
