Jannik Sinner's coaching team in 2026 might look different from what was initially expected after the Italian's comments after the 2025
Wimbledon Championships final.
Sinner's co-coaches
Darren Cahill and Simone Vagnozzi watched on as he secured a maiden Wimbledon title by winning the final 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 against the two-time champion Carlos Alcaraz.
Defeating his greatest rival in a Wimbledon final would be an outstanding achievement regardless of any other factors, but Sinner's mental strength in bouncing from
a brutal 2025 French Open final defeat to Alcaraz after having three championship points deserves much respect.
The
ATP world No. 1 has credited Cahill and Vagnozzi for their roles in helping him to overcome that loss in Paris and take the positives from a career-best showing on the clay courts at Roland Garros.
Sinner had been resigned to losing Cahill's wisdom. Earlier this year, the 23-year-old revealed that the Australian would be retiring from coaching at the end of this year.
However, the four-time Grand Slam champion's words in his press conference after winning the Wimbledon final revealed there is a chance of Cahill staying on after Sinner prevailed in a bet the pair made.
"We made a bet before the final… I told him that if I won, I could choose whether he would stay at the end of the year or not. Now the choice is mine. I've always looked for an honest person who gives me so much, not just on the tennis court, but also in life outside, both in success and disappointment. He's great at that.”
Sinner did add a caveat. He understands that Cahill would likely not travel as much as in previous years if he remained on the team, but last year's ATP Finals champion does not seem to have an issue with that.
“If I choose to stay with him, he probably won't travel so much anymore, that's normal. I've always told him I'd like to have him in Australia, because things are going well. Plus, the season is still long, there are still a lot of tournaments to go, and I'll still see him a lot... But I won the bet, now we'll see.”
The connection between Sinner and Cahill is evident. The Wimbledon winner had spoken earlier in the season about hoping to convince him to stay on the team and reverse his decision to step back from coaching.
At the time, it seemed like Sinner meant that jokingly. Although there is no official confirmation and things could change between now and the end of the season, the chance of Cahill staying on Team Sinner is undoubtedly higher than before.
Cahill remaining would avoid more changes after
Sinner split with his fitness coach Marco Panichi and his physiotherapist Ulises Badio before Wimbledon after less than a year of working with them.
Panichi and Badio had replaced Umberto Ferrara and Giacomo Naldi, who were the main figures involved in Sinner testing positive for clostebol at the 2024 Indian Wells Open. This ultimately led to the world No. 1
receiving a three-month ban.
