Alexander Zverev Withdraws From Stuttgart Open After Roland Garros Injury

by Alfredo Bassanelli

Alexander Zverev was supposed to have a quick turnaround after Roland Garros but that won't be happening due to a minor physical issue.

Zverev had a really good Roland Garros run that finished against Casper Ruud as the Norwegian proved to be better in three sets. After the match, Zverev hinted at a minor physical issue that impacted the way he played against Ruud as he explained that he wasn't able to play the way he wanted.

It was truly a bleak performance from Zverev who wasn't as good as last year but certainly much better than he showed against Ruud. The plan was to make a quick turnaround and play in Stuttgart on grass as he accepted a wild card but that won't be happening. The issue he mentioned after the match is actually a minor injury that needs some healing, resulting in his withdrawal from the 2023 Stuttgart Open.

Hello, everyone. Yes, I lost in Paris yesterday and unfortunately pulled my thigh. That's why I won't be in Stuttgart this year. I was really looking forward to it. I was really looking forward to finally playing on grass tennis again.

It's an unfortunate development for Zverev who was excited about the grass season coming up. Having managed some good wins in Paris gave him a boost in confidence and it showed on the court but once again an injury will cut his momentum. The injury is not serious but he needs more than a few days to recover as his first match at Weissenhof would be on Tuesday.

So yes, I can't play this year because I have to play the day after tomorrow on Tuesday. Unfortunately, that doesn't give me time and the risk is too great for the other tournaments.

Zverev generally doesn't have very good luck on native soil having lost earlier this year at the Munich Open, and he surely wanted to turn his luck around in Stuttgart, but he won't get a chance to do that.
