On his way to the final of the 2022 US Open, Carlos Alcaraz played three five-set matches and needed a lot of determination to eventually win all of them.

The 19-years-old Spaniard first defeated Marin Cilic in five sets, then Jannik Sinner and eventually Frances Tiafoe before setting up a final clash against Casper Ruud. Winner of their final match will also become world number 1 and so Carlos Alcaraz had a lot of motivation to reach this stage of the 2022 US Open.

During his quarterfinal match against Jannik Sinner, he repeatedly shouted "Come on bull" or "I'm a bull" and peaking on a program on Spanish radio station Onda Cero, his coach, Juan Carlos Ferrero explained why he did so.

"I played against him twice. I know him very well," Carlos Alcaraz said ahead of his final meeting with Casper Ruud. "We shared a lot of moments in the tournaments. Of course, he's a very nice guy off the court. I talk with him a lot, when we can. But, yeah, on the court, I know him. As I said, I played twice. I beat him twice. I mean, he's playing really, really well. I know that. I will have to show my best."

"In the fifth set, he spent the whole time telling himself self-help phrases to get rid of his fatigue after five hours," Ferrero said. "It was coming to the end of the match and the details are minimal. Carlos Alcaraz shouted 'I'm a bull' and 'Come on bull' to motivate himself."
