The 2023 Miami Open has already served up one of its most electrifying moments, as Thanasi Kokkinakis secured a breathtaking victory in the opening round.

The 26-year-old Australian staged an extraordinary comeback against Belgium's Zizou Bergs, saving three match points and ultimately prevailing in a nail-biting deciding tiebreak, winning the match 4-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7).

Kokkinakis' road to this moment was far from smooth; after losing his qualifier match to Frenchman Benoit Paire, the Australian's fortunes changed when he was awarded a lucky loser spot in the main draw of the ATP 1000 event. This unexpected turn of events set the stage for Kokkinakis' memorable showdown with wild card Bergs.

Starting off on the back foot, Kokkinakis was a set down, staring defeat in the face. Yet, with his sheer willpower and determination, he clawed his way back into the match, ultimately forcing a deciding tiebreak. It was here that he showcased his nerves of steel, fending off three match points and striking a winning blow that would seal his place in the Round of 64.

The magnitude of his victory was not lost on the emotional Australian. As the ball whizzed past Bergs for the final point, Kokkinakis erupted in exuberant celebration, letting out a primal scream and smashing his racquet in sheer delight. His on-court antics have become an instant classic, setting the tone for what promises to be an enthralling 2023 Miami Open.

Following the match, Kokkinakis reflected on his rollercoaster journey to this point, crediting his mental fortitude and the support of the crowd for his remarkable win.

"I've been feeling happy on court the past couple of weeks and made a pact with myself to at least compete, no matter how I'm feeling. My tennis is fine, it's just my head. I'm just trying to give myself every chance. The crowd got behind me and without them I wouldn't have pulled through. I'm happy I live to fight another day."
