Juan Martin Del Potro has set his sights on making a return to the 2023 US Open, the stage of his sole Grand Slam victory.
Despite retiring from professional tennis in 2022 after a farewell match at the Argentina Open, Del Potro remains hopeful that he can make one final appearance in Flushing Meadows, provided his health and knee condition allow it.
Del Potro's journey back to the court will not be an easy one, as he faces the daunting challenge of rehabilitating his knee and regaining the physical fitness required to compete at the highest level. However, the former world No. 3 is ready to fight for the biggest title again and he already started practicing.
The 2009 US Open champion expressed his desire to take part in the prestigious tournament one last time when he said that if he has to play one more match this year, he surely wants it to be at the 2023 US Open.
"My goal is to be ready to play an official match in the tournament. I don’t know if I will be 100% or not but, at least, if my last tennis match ever has to be this year, I want (it to be) at the US Open. I will work hard for the last time, maybe, in my career, and then you never know. God will decide if I’m ready or not.”
The US Open organizers warmly welcomed Del Potro's aspirations, extending an invitation to the Argentine icon for this year's event. Tournament director Stacey Allaster expressed her enthusiasm, saying:
"Juan Martín is a true favorite of U.S. Open fans. He is a tremendous, yet gracious, competitor and we would be thrilled for this former U.S. Open champion to join us at this year’s tournament."
