The 2022 US Open attracted a record number of spectators, and for good reason—it was historic in many ways.
It was the first time in 24 years that the tournament had been held without Roger Federer (5) and Novak Djokovic (3), who have combined to win eight championships. It was also the first Flushing Meadows tournament since 2003 in which Serena Williams, and the Big 3 of Federer, Djokovic, and Nadal did not advance to the quarterfinals.
549,657 spectators visited Flushing Meadows throughout the first eight days of the tournament. Ajla Tomljanovic defeated Serena Williams in the third round on September 2, drawing a record-high crowd of 29,837 spectators that evening. 42,202 spectators attended the day session earlier, setting a record attendance of 72,039 for a single day.
The six-time champion's match against Tomljanovic attracted 4.8 million viewers, making it the most watched in ESPN history. Nearly 890,000 spectators entered the US Open over the course of three weeks, which is a record. This number includes qualifying matches.
And although Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic didn't participate and Serena Williams and Rafael Nadal didn't reach the second week, the tournament broke its previous attendance record and so it's safe to say that in hands of Carlos Alcaraz and Iga Swiatek tennis is going in the right direction.
