Mardy Fish argued that you can't just make up rules, joining fellow America Andy Roddick in doubting the legitimacy of Canada's participation in the Davis Cup final.

The controversy began when Andy Roddick argued that Canada's Davis Cup participation was invalid because they had been given a second chance to go to the Davis Cup Finals. The Netherlands initially defeated them in March, but after Russia was barred as a result of the Ukraine War, they were given another shot.

Roddick wondered how anybody could consider Canada legitimate if they end up winnnig it:

"Canada was given a wildcard into this round after losing to qualify for this stage ….. tough to consider them legitimate if they win this whole thing" wrote the American former world number one.

Fish, a former teammate of Roddick in the Davis Cup and current US Davis Cup Team Captain responded and wrote:

"Nope. This isn’t an exhibition event where we make up rules as we go. Davis Cup has been around for over 100 years."
