Dominic Thiem is having a tough time returning to his best but he understands that his only chance is to work hard with the belief that it will work out.
Thiem has always been a hard worker and it's not something he minds doing. One of the fittest players on Tour, he struggled with the game since making his return from a wrist injury. In an interview with Kronen Zeitung, Thiem touched upon his recent struggles.
It’s a difficult situation, definitely. It’s not always easy for me, which has been the last year and a half since the US Open. What I have to do is give everything, and fight hard from the first to the last ball. Then I definitely have a chance of getting back to a very good level. This is also the only chance.
Thiem is still working with Nicolas Massu who stayed with him despite the injury but the Austrian is adamant that his tennis is his responsibility. Massu can't play for him and all the input he gives comes down to how Thiem executes.
Ultimately, it depends mostly on me, or just me. If there are too many outside voices, it’s not good. I’m 29, turning 30 soon, and it’s the only chance I’ll have 100 per cent determination to get back to a top level. I can also get a Roger Federer if I can’t muster it… I have to see if I can do it.
