Dominic Thiem revealed on social media that he has a muscle tear in the rib area, keeping him out of play for a while as his return should happen in February.

Like every other top player, Thiem started his year at the Australian Open in Melbourne, but his stay didn't last long as he lost already in the first round to the fifth-seeded Andrey Rublev, 3-6, 4-6, 2-6.

Now, a few days after his exit, the Austrian revealed that he is struggling with a muscle tear in his rib, and opened up about his injury struggles. Although there is no official timetable for his return, Thiem hinted in the social media post that he should be good to go for the Davis Cup which begins on February 3rd.

It's unclear whether he'll truly be able to play but it would be good for him not to miss time on the courts after finally starting to play some decent tennis. The results in Australia weren't good, but far better than most of 2022.

"Unfortunately, the year didn't start the way I wanted. Especially in Melbourne, I wanted to perform at my best, but I tore a small muscle fiber in my rib."

Thiem on his injury

"The results show that it's not too bad, and playing at the Davis Cup should be possible. I will try everything in the upcoming week to get fit and practice well."

Since the Austrian got to compete at the first Grand Slam of the season thanks to a wild card provided by the tournament organizers, he did not forget to thank them for that, even though he exited the tournament earlier than he wanted to.

"Big thanks for the WC at the Australian Open, as always, the event was amazing and definitely one of the best in the sporting world."
