Reilly Opelka will not be competing in the 2023 Australian Open due to injury, extending his time away from the ATP Tour.
The American player, who is currently ranked 38th in the world, has not played a match since his loss to Nick Kyrgios at the 2022 Citi Open in Washington in August. Opelka's withdrawal from the first Grand Slam of the year comes as a disappointment to fans, as the player had a solid showing at the Australian Open in 2022, reaching the third round.
However, injuries have kept him out of competition for several months, and it is unclear when he will be able to return to the court. Without Opelka in the draw, the Australian Open will be missing one of its top players. The 25-year-old had a successful year in 2022, reaching a career-high ranking of world no. 17 in February and winning two ATP titles in Houston and Dallas.
Opelka's withdrawal also means that he will lose valuable ranking points, and he is expected to drop even further in the ATP Rankings. It remains to be seen when the American will be able to return to competition, but for now, fans will have to wait to see him back on the court.
