Novak Djokovic will lose his number one ranking spot in the ATP Rankings on Monday to Daniil Medvedev but he could find himself out of the top 10 by September if some things align.

Novak Djokovic supported the decision of players to band together in response to Wimbledon banning some of his colleagues yet he was also keen to point out that stripping the points might not have been the best course of action. There is a very clear reason why that's the case and it's because his legacy will be severely impacted by this.

After failing to defend the 2021 Roland Garros trophy, Djokovic will find himself ranked number 3 tomorrow, Monday, June 13th. Both Daniil Medvedev and Alexander Zverev will overtake him in the rankings. Since he won't be able to replenish the 2000 points from Wimbledon last year his ranking position will take a further hit after Wimbledon.

He will also lose 1000 ATP points from the frozen points total in 2019 that are coming off as well, meaning that he will probably drop down to number 7 by the end of next month. Considering the United States did not lessen the travel restrictions, Djokovic as an unvaccinated player won't be able to enter the country losing out on the chance to defend his US Open points and earn points in Cincinnati.

The consequence of all of that is that he might find himself ranked outside of the top 10 by September unless the travel restrictions get lifted (unlikely) or he gets vaccinated (even less likely). The overall picture is gloomy for the Serbian, with his inability to defend the points coming off his ranking certain to be a source of huge frustration.
