Novak Djokovic Confirms Davis Cup Participation In 2023 After Last Year's Absence

Novak Djokovic always highlighted playing for Serbia as his greatest honour and he'll make a return to the Davis Cup after an absence last year.

Djokovic has played for Serbia regularly, and while he never won a gold medal for the country he did lead them to the trophy in the Davis Cup. He'll try to do that again later this year, as the Serbian now confirmed that he'll be part of the team for the 2023 Davis Cup.

He didn't play last year but that was largely because the country failed to qualify for the final event. This year he'll be part of the team for the qualifiers hoping to help them book a spot in the final showdown at the end of the season.

Yes, I will play this year and I am looking forward to it. Last year, I was really hoping to join the guys for the finals tournament, but unfortunately they didn’t make it out of the group. It was a very tough group, though.

Djokovic confirms his Davis Cup participation

From September 12th till the 17th Serbia will battle Spain, the Czech Republic and the Republic of Korea in Valencia. It's a rather short turnaround from the US Open but Djokovic already committed his commitment to Team Captain Viktor Troicki.

Knock on wood, I hope that I will stay healthy. In that case, I will be available. It’s true that the schedule is really tough, since we play in Valencia ten days after the US Open finals, but I told captain Viktor (Troiciki) that I will be there. I can’t wait.

The participation also allows Djokovic to play in the 2024 Paris Olympics in hopes of winning the elusive gold medal for his country. For now, though he's focused on the Wimbledon final on Sunday.
