New tennis stat proves that a shift in generations is occuring in real time

There have been fewer and fewer tennis players born in the 1980s participating at the highest level in recent years.

At the 2019 Wimbledon, we had 30 players born in the '80s competing in the 2nd round of the event and since then that number has been dropping with every grand slam. Compare that to the 2022 Wimbledon where we had only eight of them it shows that the older players are not getting deep into these events anymore.

Eight players who were born in the 1980s are currently in the second round of the US Open, which equals that number. They are Isner, Ramos, Cilic, Gasquet, Fognini, Ramos, Murray, and Sousa. On the other hand, we have 12 players in the second round who were born in the 2000s.

Over time, there has been an increase in the proportion of players born in the 2000s who have advanced to the second round of a grand slam. There was only one in 2019, and after last night, there are now 12. It clearly shows a shift in generations that is happening in real time.
