2022 US Open to bizarrely feature 3 defending champions including Rafael Nadal

This year is the first US Open for Medvedev, Nadal, and Thiem since winning the championship, therefore the three players will be defending their titles the same year.

It's intriguing to debate the idea of defending a trophy because everyone has a different perspective on it. The general consensus is that if a player participates in the competition and wins it, he will defend his trophy the following year. Nadal won the US Open trophy in 2019 but he didn't attend for the next two years. This year will be the first time attending the event so technically he's going to defend his trophy.

Dominic Thiem experienced the same situation, as he won it in 2020 but did not participate in the previous season. It will be his first time competing in the US Open and defending his championship. The "real" defending champion of the competition is Daniil Medvedev, who won it last year.

Due to how coincidental it is, it's a highly unique situation that hasn't occurred before. We have three players who won a Grand Slam and the same edition of the event will be the one they each attend after winning the trophy.
