The US Open in 2022 will stand out from many others since there's a chance for a thrilling race for the top spot in the rankings.

The battle would take place on the courts, and the outcome would entirely depend on how far particular players advance in the competition. The US Open will start with Daniil Medvedev ranked first, but the Russian has the option of keeping that position or dropping it. He is one of five players that have a chance to be ranked first after the competition, along with Rafael Nadal, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Casper Ruud, and Carlos Alcaraz.

The common theme for the four of them is that they have to reach the final at least. Medvedev, Ruud, Alcaraz and Tsitsipas can't become number one without reaching the final. Only Nadal can do so but he needs some things to happen a certain way. Below you'll find the scenarios in which each one will end up as number one.

As you'll see Nadal has the easiest route to number on.

MEDVEDEV

- if he wins the trophy he'll be number one regardless of anything else.

- if he losses in the final but not to Alcaraz, Ruud or Tsitsipas and Nadal does not reach the semi-final

NADAL

- if he wins the event, he's number one regardless of any other result.

- if he reaches the final but doesn't lose to Medvedev

- If he reaches the semi-final and none of Alcaraz, Medvedev, Tstisipas or Ruud win the title

- if he reaches the quater-final and Medvedev and Tsitsipas fail to reach the final and Ruud and Alcaraz don't win the title

- if neither of Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Alcaraz, Ruud reach the final

TSITSIPAS

- If he wins the title but not against Nadal

- if he loses the final but not against Medvedev, Alcaraz or Ruud and Nadal loses before the semi-final

ALCARAZ

- if he wins the final but not against Nadal

- If he loses the final but not against Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Ruud and Nadal fails to reach the semi-final

RUUD

- If he loses the final but not against Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Alcaraz and Nadal fails to reach quater-final

- If he wins but not against Nadal
