The 2025 Qatar Open in Doha, which will run from February 17th to 23rd, will undoubtedly be the best in its history.
Karen Khachanov is the defending champion after beating the young ATP star Jakub Mensik in last year's final. Several top ATP players have won the tournament since it was first played in 1993.
The legendary trio of Novak Djokovic, who beat Carlos Alcaraz in the Australian Open quarterfinal, Rafael Nadal, and Roger Federer have all won the Qatar Open. David Ferrer, Boris Becker, and Richard Gasquet are other title winners.
While there have been several terrific entry lists over the years in Doha, the event's upgrade from an ATP 250 to an ATP 500 means the 2025 entry list is undoubtedly the best in the tournament's history.
Novak Djokovic surprised many by signing up for the tournament. The Serbian's focus on the four Grand Slams means he usually does not play in any of the events in February when there are no major or ATP Masters 1000 tournaments.
However, Djokovic has indicated that he intends to play more events this season after not winning any Grand Slams last year for the first time since 2017. He played a very limited schedule in 2024, including not competing at the ATP Finals.
The Serbian hopes the Qatar Open will be his first tournament since winning a record 25th Grand Slam at the Australian Open. That would make him the unprecedented record holder ahead of Margaret Court.
He is just two matches away from achieving that after beating Alcaraz in the quarterfinal. Djokovic's next match in Melbourne will be against Alexander Zverev, who desperately wants to win a maiden Grand Slam title.
Alcaraz has also signed up for the Qatar Open. The 21-year-old competed on clay in Buenos Aires and Rio during the last few seasons in February and elected to skip all the hard-court tournaments taking place at that time.
Although the Spaniard's defeat to Djokovic was disappointing, it is unlikely to impact his motivation in Doha. Alcaraz has a chance to make a mark in his first appearance at the ATP 500 tournament.
ATP world No. 1 Jannik Sinner will also compete in Doha. The Italian's level on hard courts has been incredible in recent years, including winning the Australian Open and US Open last season to secure his maiden Grand Slam titles.
Sinner is still in contention to defend his Australian Open title after thrashing Alex de Minaur in the quarterfinal. While he is the favorite to win the season's opening Grand Slam, Ben Shelton could present a serious challenge in the quarterfinal.
Alcaraz, Sinner, and Djokovic's presence at an ATP 500 tournament is unique. It may never happen again and fans worldwide should savor seeing those high-profile names competing together in Doha.
Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Grigor Dimitrov, and Andrey Rublev are other high-profile names on the Qatar Open entry list. The tournament could be one of the best of the 2025 ATP season.
