Matteo Berrettini lost in the 2022 Napoli Cup final to compatriot Lorenzo Musetti and subsequently he withdrew from the 2022 Vienna Open.
Last year's Wimbledon finalist struggled with injuries a lot this season and the year of setbacks continues for Matteo Berrettini as he withdrew from the 2022 Vienna Open due to a left foot injury. He was supposed to play against Daniel Evans in the first round, but was replaced by a lucky-loser Oscar Otter.
During the ATP 250 event in Naples, the Italian felt injured already in his semifinal clash and despite his team telling him to stop, he carried on and won the match.
“I don’t even know how I did it,” Berrettini said. “I wasn’t feeling very good. I asked for the physio because my foot was hurting. It happened so many times in my career that I had to fight through so many things, not just thinking about the tennis ball. I didn’t want to retire, I'm sick of retiring. My team told me ‘I think you should stop’. But I tried and I found a way.”
Following his withdrawal, Berrettini shared news on social media: "Following multiple assessments from medical experts on my left foot, I have been informed that I will not be able to compete at the Erste Bank Open in Vienna. I will do everything I can to try be ready to compete in Paris."
Before his withdrawal, the Italian was still in fight for one of the three remaining spots at the 2022 TP Finals. But since he's 950 points behind Felix Auger-Aliassime, who would be now the last player to qualify, his chances dropped to zero.
