Kei Nishikori was scheduled to make his comeback at the ATP Challenger competition in Calgary, however he will not play again in 2022 because yet another injury.
The Japanese athlete wanted to get some match practice in before the season ended because he hasn't played since October of last year. Moreover, Kei Nishikori disappeared from the ATP Rankings for the first time in 12 years after all his points vanished following the Indian Wells week.
Nishikori's ranking dropped steadily from 47th in January of this year as a result of the operation delaying his ability to compete. By the end of May, he was ranked 84th, and on June 12th, he dropped out of the top 100.
He dropped from 160th to 297th on August 7th, and by the beginning of September, he was down to 700th. To return to his previous career high, he will have to fight a tough uphill struggle, but he should most definitely be able to do it.
"Unfortunately, during practice Kei has suffered serious ankle sprain and has been ordered by medical team to take the next 3 to 4 weeks off," statement reads. "Kei has decided to finish the season now in order to have a good off-season training block in December."
