Novak Djokovic had a chance to make history at the 2021 US Open but Daniil Medvedev didn't allow it to happen with an incredible performance.
It's almost impossible to say that a player beating Djokovic was never in doubt during a match but Medvedev's level in that US Open final truly was like that. From the moment he started playing, it became pretty clear that there is no way he was not going to win that match.
I have my name a little bit in the history, I didn’t let him win the calendar-year Grand Slam and I feel really sorry for him because I would, in a way, like him to do it. But every time I play him I want to win, I’m competitive, I don’t care who I have on the other side of the net, if it’s my best friend, if it’s my worst enemy, I just want to win.
The Russian is a fan of Djokovic and how he plays tennis with the duo praciticing a few times together as well. He revealed how Djokovic treated him the same way regardless of his ranking which is something he remembers well.
I like many things about Novak, he was so kind to me since I was a kid, since I first met him when I was 480 in the world. He was always the same, no matter if I’m No. 1 in the world or No. 480 and I give him a lot of respect for this.
Just yesterday, Medvedev defeated Djokovic again, when he stopped his 20-match winning streak to reach the 2023 Dubai Championships final. Overall, the two met already 14 times, with Djokovic leading the H2H 9-5.
