Fritz Masters Rune To Reach 5th Consecutive Quarterfinal

| by Balasz Virag

Taylor Fritz played quarterfinals at almost every tournament that he joined this season and the 2023 Miami Open will be no exception.

At the Australian Open, the tall American was eliminated already in the second round, but since then, he played a quarterfinal or better at every ATP event that he signed up for. First, he reached the semifinals in Dallas, before winning the title in Delray Beach.

Then, Fritz played semifinals in Acapulco and later, his Indian Wells title defence ended in the quarterfinals. Now, he will be playing in yet another quarterfinal after beating Holger Rune in the fourth round of the 2023 Miami Open.

The young Dane came to Miami after a disappointing third-round loss at Indian Wells. At the 2023 Miami Open, he successfully navigated his way through the third round, but his fourth-round opponent proved to be just too good.

It was the first meeting for the two, but they came out firing early on. First, Fritz broke his opponent in the second game, but the young Dane immediately broke back in the longest game of the match.

Both players then played well on their service games, until the eighth game. A combination of two unforced errors and a double fault from Rune gave the American everything he needed to break and win the first set 6-3.

Carrying on the momentum from the first set, Fritz started the second set in the best way possible, breaking his opponent and earning a very important lead.

Thanks to his service, the American No. 1 then kept his advantage throughout the set to win the match 6-3, 6-4 and reach the 2023 Miami Open quarterfinals, where he'll await the winner of the match between the World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz and his compatriot Tommy Paul.
