Jannik Sinner made Andrey Rublev look quite average at the 2023 Miami Open, beating him in two sets to secure the quarter-final.
Sinner has had a really solid season so far with some good showings, but he’s still searching for that big break. Perhaps it will happen for him at this year’s Miami Open because, so far, he has looked really good.
In his round-of-16 match, the Italian faced Andrey Rublev, who was also playing some superb tennis before this meeting. The match wasn’t that hard for Sinner, who controlled it for much of it without too many problems.
The match lasted for about 72 minutes, which really isn’t long considering what kind of players played. Sinner started furiously in the opening set, dominating largely behind his first serve.
The Italian player served amazingly in this match, dropping only four points behind his serve overall. Rublev wasn’t quite as lucky as he didn’t really serve that well, at least not well enough to deter Sinner in any meaningful way.
The Italian was just blasting winners from the baseline without too many issues, finishing with 16 winners in the opening set. Sinner was equally impressive in the second set, once again dominating on his serve and not allowing a single break point.
Rublev also played well in the second set, certainly much better than he did in the opening set, but it still wasn’t enough. The Italian created one break point and took it immediately, which would prove to be enough.
They were quite on par hitting-wise in the second set, as Sinner finished with 13 winners while Rublev had 12. Where the difference was that Sinner had only one unforced error while Rublev had five.
That was also the reason why the Italian player was able to win the match 6-2, 6-4, securing a quarter-final spot. Sinner will take on the winner of the match between the 26th-seeded Botic van de Zandschulp and Emil Ruusuvuori.
