Bianca Andreescu was once touted as the next superstar, but injuries have troubled her since that moment, and they are not letting up, with yet another one happening at the Miami Open.
Andreescu might be the unluckiest tennis player in recent memory, as the Canadian suffered yet another injury. A brief look at her career trajectory shows a player who is progressively playing less and less tennis every year.
That’s never a good thing because after playing 55 matches in 2019, Andreescu has cracked only 30 matches once, and it was last year when she played 33 overall. That’s not ideal for a player who was expected to take over the Tour after winning her maiden Grand Slam trophy in style.
This year so far has been pretty decent for her. She has mainly kept herself upright and even made the semi-final in Hua Hin. She also played really well at the Miami Open, beating Emma Raducanu, Maria Sakkari, and Sofia Kenin.
Next up was Ekaterina Alexandrova, with a chance to go to the quarter-final, and the Canadian was battling for that on the court. The Russian ended up winning the opening set 7-6, with Andreescu holding a 2-0 lead when the worst happened.
Mid-rally, Andreescu simply dropped to the ground, holding her ankle while being in seemingly a lot of pain. She was rolling around for quite a bit before the physio showed up, and after examining what had happened, the Canadian retired from the match.
This is yet another in a long line of very unfortunate things to happen to Andreescu. While her tennis is evidently good enough to be competitive on the WTA Tour, the Canadian seemingly can’t avoid injury woes. Her opponent was naturally sad to see what happened on the court.
"I'm just really sorry that it happened to [Andreescu]. Seeing her on the court in so much pain, it’s just painful to watch. You cannot help, you just can do nothing, which is terrible. And I think she’s going to be fine soon, and I’m wishing for her speedy recovery."
