Few challenges in sport are quite as daunting as facing Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final, which is why Holger Rune called it his "dream match to win."

Djokovic has won the Australian Open a record 10 times with his most recent triumph coming in 2023 where he defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in straight sets in the final. In 10 finals, the Serbian star has emerged unscathed at the year's first Grand Slam, winning every single time.

Djokovic has played some memorable matches at Melbourne Park over the years and his 2012 marathon win over Rafael Nadal ranks high on the list of the greatest tennis matches of all time. Yet, Rune would relish locking horns with the Serb at his kingdom in the final.

"My dream match to win? AusOpen final vs. Djokovic!"

Rune was answering questions on Portuegese outlet Bola Amarela where he also spoke of the impact Boris Becker has had on his season and his development despite working together for just a few months. The Dane credits the German for rekindling his form and recently confirmed an extension to their partnership.

"I think I already took the next step here at the end of 2023. I started to work with Boris Becker and this is something important for me to have a coach with experience from being a top player but also a top coach."

Rune endured a major slump in the middle of the 2023 season before Becker took over the reins from Patrick Mouratoglou. He won once in 11 matches between his Wimbledon exit until late October. Rune is adamant the former Wimbledon champion will steer him through such a rough patch which tends to happen almost annually.

Moreover, Rune opined that being only 20 is positive for his development as he is able to learn and improve through adversity. Mistakes are bound to happen he says and the most important thing is that he stays true to his dreams and goals.

"I have a tough period every year and this is also something Boris is going to help me with. When it’s the right time to take a break, when it’s time to increase or decrease practice."
"It’s tough when things are not going your way. But I also think it’s part of life especially when you are young. I cannot expect to know everything and do everything right. I learn and I want to learn and I get stronger mentally going through tough times. Who do I come back every time? It’s pretty simple. My dream and my goals mean so much to me so even though I suffer the dream still is my drive."
