Simona Halep's tennis career was shortened by a period during which she was unable to compete, and in light of other doping cases, she feels angry about it.
The Romanian player had to spend more than a year away from the tennis courts, and while she was able to return to the correct headspace and compete on the WTA Tour, the latest developments in the tennis world reminded her of everything that happened again.
Jannik Sinner tested positive for a banned substance and avoided any suspension, while Iga Swiatek received only a one-month ban after a positive. That seems like nothing compared to Halep's case.
Therefore, it's not surprising that Halep feels a certain way about these cases, but as many explained, every case is different, which is why she might have found herself in a situation that she found herself in.
Former WTA doubles World No. 1, Rennae Stubbs, told Halep not to be angry at Swiatek but at the system, and during the most recent episode of her podcast, she and Andrea Petkovic discussed the Romanian player.
According to Petkovic, Halep is angry at the moment, and because of her statements, some people who previously supported her might feel differently now.
"She’s angry. She’s acting from emotions. She’s not making rational decisions and you can feel the tide turning on her a little bit. I think the one thing that Simona had through all of this was sympathy."
"People really were on her side and it’s turning this year just because she hasn’t let go. If I had been in her situation I don’t know that I could have let go either."
Stubbs agreed with Petkovic, also feeling that it would have been difficult to just forget the situation, given what Halep had to go through before being allowed to compete again.
"I wouldn’t have been able to as well. If I felt like I was also ripped off, I would not be throwing it on the player. I will be throwing it on the system. I would be throwing it on the ITIA. I’ll be throwing on WADA."
"I’d be throwing it on everyone else but the player. She should understand that if the tables are turned, she wouldn’t want Iga throwing darts at her. That’s what I don’t understand."
Petkovic also defended Swiatek and Sinner and their cases, saying that if Halep was in the same situation like they were, she would have acted the same.
"If Simona had known right away where the contamination was she would have done exactly the same thing that Iga has or Jannik has. She would have tried to get away with the least impact possible on her career."
“And I think that’s where she’s losing people slightly because until now it was against the system, it was, 'Why am I not being heard? Why is CAS taking eight months to get back to me?'"
"She has the right to talk about this because why isn’t she being heard when her career is on the line. She’s not 20 anymore. She doesn’t have 15 years left."
