The Marrakech Open returns for its 32nd edition on the ATP Tour, maintaining its longstanding reputation as the only tour-level event currently held on African soil.
It features a packed 28-player singles field who will vie for 250 ranking points and a golden opportunity to win an ATP title. It is commonly known by its sponsor name, Grand Prix Hassan II, for drawing all of its funding from Morocco's King Mohammed VI.
This year, the tournament promises to be highly competitive, given the star power in the draw following the release of the entry list. The top seed is Serbia's Laslo Djere, one of four Top 50 players who have signed up to play in Marrakech.
He is joined by Austria's No. 1 Sebastian Ofner and Chile's Alejandro Tabilo. British one-hander Daniel Evans is returning to Morocco for the third year in a row after a respectable semifinal finish on his least favorite surface last season.
New Kazakh national Alexander Shevchenko, the fifth seed, will look to keep up his recent good form when he switches to clay. However, defending champion Roberto Carballes Baena will not be seeded. The Spaniard will hope the surface plays to his liking after criticizing the state of courts in Santiago.
Carballes Baena isn't the only seasoned veteran in the draw. That accolade is reserved for 2010 champion Stan Wawrinka who won this tournament when it was initially held in Morocco's cosmopolitan city of Casablanca. The Swiss recently dipped to World No. 70.
There is an unfamiliar name in the field. And that is Matteo Berrettini. The former Wimbledon finalist last played at this tournament in 2018, when he was eliminated in the first round. He hasn't played in 2024 so far because of injuries, but he is expected to feature during the spring hard court swing in the US.
Tournament organizers at the Marrakech Open will name three wild cards in the days leading to the main draw start. Two players will earn special exemption entry, and four more will navigate the qualifying draw. Be sure to check the 2024 entry list for this ATP 250 tournament below.
