Venus Williams signs up for yet another event; set to play at least twice in January

The ASB Classic in Auckland will be held for the first time in three years and it while the defending champion won't be there, her sister will.

In 2020, Serena Williams became the last WTA champion of the ASB Classic in Auckland as the event hasn't appeared in the calendar since. However, in 2023 it will make a return and Venus Williams will be one of the players competing as she will attempt to defend the title that was last won by Williams, but her sister Serena.

She will already be the fourth Grand Slam champion that will compete at the event as the entry list includes Emma Raducanu, Sloane Stephens and Sofia Kenin. Speaking about her appearance in New Zealand, the Tournament Director, Nicolas Lamperin said:

“We are absolutely thrilled to have one of the greatest players returning to the ASB Classic,” he said Tournament. “Venus is not just one of the best players in the history of the sport, but she loves it here in New Zealand."

"When her agent contacted us, we were more than pleased to offer her a wildcard into the ASB Classic. She loves it here in New Zealand and Auckland in particular, and the fans here love her.”

The 42-year-old American, who will play her first singles match at the 2023 ASB Classic in Auckland since the 2022 US Open, commented on her appearance, saying:

“I’m looking forward to playing my first tournament of the season in Auckland. The tournament and fans always make me feel welcome and I’m excited to compete there in January,” said Williams.
