Sofia Kenin is back, at least in the 2023 Wimbledon main draw as the American finished off her qualifying campaign with a convincing win over Taylor Townsend.

Kenin has dealt with a lot of injuries in the past two years. It's been a long road for the American which is why she's supper happy just to be able to play tennis. At times it looked very bleak as she had to watch other players compete at events she wanted to play.

She never gave up and finally found some consistency this year. Emphasis on some consistency as she still had rather weak 58-minute showings but for the most, the American played better and better. It was only a time before she figured things out as she is a brutal competitor.

The run here at Wimbledon was very impressive. A win in the first qualifying round got her closer to the main draw. The second match got her only within one match of the Wimbledon main draw and today's win over Townsend sealed her spot in the main draw.

Townsend is a tough player and can play well making this win rather impressive. The first set saw Kenin absorb the attacks of Townsend well forcing her to overhit more than once. Sofia managed to keep her baseline play in check without the ball sailing too wide and it resulted in a solid opening set win. The second set was a bit more impressive from Kenin as she was a bit more aggressive posting 13 winners overall.

She was still pretty balanced in her approach carefully avoiding overhitting. The final score was 6-3 6-3 for Kenin as she has now four grass wins to her name this season. It's also her return to Wimbledon as she withdrew from last year's edition due to injury woes. The American's best result at the event came in 2021 when she made the second round.
