Teenage prodigy Clara Tauson elected to retire from her match at the W80 event in Poitiers after the umpire made several questionable calls that went against her.

Tauson has widely been touted as the next big star out of Denmark, and for a while, it did seem like it was going to happen. She was playing super solid tennis and beating some really good players.

This year so far has been decent as well for her, even though not as good as last year. Tauson won two WTA trophies in 2021, peaking at number 33 on the WTA Rankings.

This year has been more of a mixed bag so far for her, with some solid wins but also some bad losses. To try and get back to her best, she signed up for a W80 event in Poitiers and played well until the semi-final of the tournament.

She recorded three wins in straight sets before the semi-final against Petra Marcinko, which didn’t go as well. Tauson opened well, taking the opening set 6-3, but then Marcinko stormed back to win the second set 6-1.

Tauson wasn’t happy with the way the umpire was calling the match, and she had every right to be upset. Tennis fans on social media posted some of the screenshots from the match, with the umpire making some really bad calls.

Most of those went against Tauson, and down 1-2 in the final set, the Danish player opted to retire. It was an interesting move and certainly one that will be dissected in tennis circles for months to come, but it didn’t seem like it came because of physical issues.

It seemed like she did it specifically because she was unhappy with the umpire. With some of the proof provided on social media by her fans, there was plenty to feel upset about.
