Leylah Fernandez updated fans about what happened after revealing she wanted to go on a date in Montreal.
While in Washington, D.C., for the Citi Open, Fernandez surprised the tennis world by making a social media post about her desire to go out with a guy in Montreal, and told those interested to send a message.
Fernandez did not let the attention that generated distract her at the Citi Open. She produced her best tennis since reaching the 2021 US Open final
to win a maiden WTA 500 title.
The 22-year-old defeated Maya Joint, Jessica Pegula, Taylor Townsend, Elena Rybakina, and Anna Kalinskaya to reign supreme in the U.S. capital. Beating so many high-quality players made it among the most impressive title runs of the season.
Understandably, Fernandez could not recover properly for the 2025 Canadian Open in Montreal and lost to Joint in the opening round of her home event. Being eliminated so soon meant there was not much opportunity to ask her if she went on a date.
Fernandez provides details of her date
In an interview with the Tennis Channel at the 2025
Cincinnati Open, Fernandez disclosed that she had an enjoyable date with a nice guy who had not actually seen her social media post when initially contacting the
WTA star.
“I had a good time with the guy. He was funny, he is nice. It’s a little hard because a lot of guys who have been messaging me are international, so they were going to fly in. So I was like I am not going to do that to them."
"So I was giving it one more day and then stumbled upon him and his message kind of caught my attention. When I asked him did you even see my video? And he was like No, I didn’t."
Fernandez wisely did some research beforehand to ensure the man was not fake or dangerous, humorously referring to it as stalking. She also said the pair had been on another date and remained in contact.
"His first message caught my attention, and then afterwards stalked him to make sure that he’s real. He was a real person, seemed like a nice guy, and then got a couple of opinions from family and team members to make sure they were okay with it too. There has been a second date, and we are keeping in contact, so we will see."
Fernandez's Citi Open success part of a glorious few weeks for Canadian tennis
After Fernandez secured her maiden WTA 500 title, 18-year-old Victoria Mboko achieved an even more stunning success at the Canadian Open in Montreal, beating Naomi Osaka in the final to win her home event.
Osaka received much criticism for not congratulating Mboko in the ceremony afterward. While disappointing, that does not take any of the gloss off one of the most incredible title runs in recent years.
That success meant so much to Canadians that the men's singles final in Toronto between Ben Shelton and Karen Khachanov
was interrupted by jubilant celebrations among the fans inside the stadium.
